"An international bicycle tour is more than a long bike ride. Once you include borders, flights, visas, foreign health systems, different traffic rules and uncertain regions, preparation becomes part of the journey.

This does not mean you have to control everything. But you should know which topics need attention before departure: safety, bicycle technology, health, bureaucracy, transport, visas, tickets, costs and route planning.

Start with the route. Check not only distance and scenery, but also road condition, traffic, climate, border crossings, political situation and possible obstacles. A route can look simple on the map and be very difficult on the ground.

Then look at documents: passport, visas, vaccination record, insurance proof, driving licence if relevant, copies and digital backups. For each country, check how long you may stay and whether permits or registration are required.

Health also needs preparation. Know where to get help in an emergency, what your insurance covers and which medication or vaccinations are useful. On long trips, it matters to know what you can treat yourself and when professional help is needed.

Technically, the further you travel from workshops and spare parts, the more important robust and simple solutions become. You do not need to carry every possible spare part, but you should understand your bike's weak points.

A good international bicycle tour combines freedom with preparation. The more honestly you look at difficult topics before departure, the calmer you can improvise on the road."
